Treading lightly

One of our goals with the 100 Mile Banquet is to put on an event that is as green and environmentally friendly as possible. Many of our producers are organic or biodynamic. Packaging will be kept to a minimum as we will be collecting most ingredients direct from the producer — and, of course, we’re also keeping food miles to a minimum by sticking to our 100-mile radius. Wherever possible, we’re using recycled products for things such as gift bags, tickets, flyers and other printing supplies. And in the kitchen, we’ll be using biodegradable rubbish bags, composting food scraps, and cleaning up with environmentally friendly products. It’s all part of our philosophy that great tasting food doesn’t have to cost the earth!

Introducing our chef!

In charge of our delicious menu is trained chef, Angela Hutchins. Angela has years of experience in the hospitality industry, working as a chef for various catering companies and à la carte restaurants — including a stint at Sydney’s popular Watermark Restaurant — as well as running her own highly successful gourmet sandwich business in Manly. Since moving to Stroud, Angela has started up King Street Kitchen which makes home-style oven-baked and natural muesli. Her range is available at the Newcastle City Farmers Market or you can order direct by calling 02 4994 5993.

Creative flair!

Lending her creative talents to the banquet is local mosaic artist, Paula Cole. Paula is responsible for our wonderful logo and will also be creating a mosaic to stand as the centrepiece for the banquet. With a background in drawing, painting and design, Paula turned her focus to mosaics six years ago. Today her work is exhibited at select locations and she is also happy to take on commissions. More examples of her mosaic art can be seen at her website: http://www.peachtreemosaics.com

The wines of Mill Creek vigneron Helen Gillard are the perfect complement to our sensational 100 Mile Banquet menu. Nestled between Peppers Mountain and the clean waters of Mill Creek, Helen’s six-acre Mill Creek Vineyard sits on a perfect north-facing hill with volcanic and loam soils. Here, the days are warm and, importantly, the nights are cool. Helen’s masterly oversight transforms the fruit from Mill Creek’s own fully developed Shiraz plantings as well as premium Semillon vines in the Hunter Valley into a range of seriously good wines that also includes a Sauvignon Blanc and a Beaujolais-style Soft Red. Mill Creek wines are available at two of Newcastle’s finest restaurants — Bistro Tartine in Cleary Street, Hamilton, and Rocksalt in Hannell Street, Wickham — or from the producer each Sunday at Newcastle City Farmers Market. For optional vineyard pick-up call 02 4994 5082.
